Movie Sunday

Went to see Ultraviolet today with Mike and Duncan. Cal and my mom saw the remake of The Shaggy Dog. Mom thought it was cute. Cal said it was funny as well so I reckon that means two thumbs up from them.

As for our movie, I wasn’t expecting much. Truly. It looked damn cheesy and I figured if nothing else the effects would be fun and I could make sarcastic comments throughout the movie—much like I did with that atrocious waste of celluloid Bloodrayne. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by Ultraviolet. It started with a montage of comic covers, illustrated by current comic artists. Before you start thinking this movie was based on a comic, it wasn’t. But boy did it ever feel like a comic book movie, which is exactly what the director was intending I’m sure. It wasn’t as comic styled as Sin City but from the sparse (and sometimes cheesy) dialogue to the beautifully paced fight scenes you felt you were watching a comic on the big screen. Way keen for a comic geek like me.

Sure the plot was simple but it worked if you viewed this movie as an action comic. The main character of Violet kicks butt against impossible odds time and time again—much like in a comic. After every fight she always has a cool pose (comics!) and blood was minimal and artfully arranged in the scene when it was used. Characters are fairly one dimensional but Milla Jovovich gives a decent performance as the lead character fighting against the odds to save the life of a young boy.

Ultraviolet was a surprisingly fun movie.
