Pumpkin Patch Fun
My day began quite early when Cal woke up around 1 am probably because of a stuffy nose (he's got a cold). He settled down only to wake up a few hours later. I put him in my bed with Mike and I went to his bed hoping both of us would get some decent sleep. Unfortunately we didn't. And supposedly Mike didn't either--Cal squirmed a lot he said.
So I ended up taking Cal back to his bed with me around 7 am. I ended up asking Mike to get Duncan ready for school because Cal kept waking up and crying when I'd get out of bed. I shut his door and left them to their own devices. Cal and I dozed and I got up around 9 when my bladder wouldn't let me stay in bed any longer. Luck was with me and Cal stayed asleep until close to 10. He was a lot happier being awake this time.
Mom arrived soon after Cal woke up because we were scheduled to go to the pumpkin patch with Tracey's class. Cal was kind of whiny and didn't seem like he wanted to go but I knew once he got out there he'd have a good time. And his cold wasn't really horrible so I decided to risk it.
We made it to the school by 11 am and the bus finally left the school parking lot close to 11:30. Once we got to the pumpkin patch in Tuttle we found a free hay bale ring and everyone sat down to eat their lunch.
After lunch the kids milled about and looked at the little pond that's stocked with goldfish. Eventually we moved into the barn for the lecture about pumpkins, squashes, gourds and corn. This mainly consists of one of the pumpkin patch employees showing the kids different kinds of pumpkins, gourds, squashes and corn and Tracey asking everyone lots of questions about them. The kids also got to pet a cute baby pig.
Once lecture time was over everyone filed out to see the animals (goats, rabbits, turkeys, burros and a pony). There were also hay bale mazes and cool hay bales to climb on. Tracey took pictures of each of the kids in front of a hay bale house surrounded by pumpkins and squashes.
Then it was off to the never ending corn maze. Mom had been watching Cal the whole time and I'd been overseeing random kids. By the time the corn maze walkthrough rolled around she was plenty pooped so Cal and I went through without her. Unfortunately since Cal wasn't feeling very well he wouldn't walk through the corn maze. I did most of it with him on my shoulders and carried him the last bit.
Finally it was time for the hay ride. That went without incident and we stopped at the tiny patch where the kids could pick out their pumpkins. That's always a hoot because some of the kids get pumpkins that are just a little bit too big for them to carry. And Tracey's rule is each kid has to carry their own pumpkin. Yes, we've made it back to school with some cracked pumpkins but most of the time they arrive unscathed. Today was such a day and only one kid picked a pumpkin that was too big but even he hossed that puppy on to the bus with only a little bit of whining.
We made it back to the school by 3:30 and mom dropped me off at the house and she and Cal headed to her house. Today was Tae Kwon Do day so I waited for Duncan and took him to class then headed to mom's. As I'd hoped, Cal fell asleep on the drive back to mom's so he was snoozing away by the time I got there.
And that was my day. Not a damn thing tidied in the house but I've got two pumpkins on my front porch.
