Damn you, Joss Whedon

Astonishing X-Men #1, cover by who the hell knows.I purged my comic collection of all things X (except for Excalibur) years ago. I adopted a "just say no" policy when it came to X-books. After all, they're insidous. You decide you'll just read one and end up getting sucked into five others in order to follow the storyline. Marvel did it to increase sales on all their titles but all it did was piss me off that I had to read a few crappy comics to get a coherent story out of the comic I really wanted to read. As a result, I eventually dumped any X-titles I was reading along with every Marvel comic I was collecting at the time.

So I go into the comic shop last week and John points out the new issue of Astonishing X-Men #1 written by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Damn. I knew this was coming out but told John I had a policy against reading X-titles. So what do I do? I buy the stupid thing anyway. And you know what? It was good.

Joss Whedon brought back my favorite character, Kitty Pryde. And he made her funny and interesting and a smart ass. Now Scott Summers (Cyclops) is one of the main characters and that's a drawback. I never did care for him. He whined too much for my taste. But Joss Whedon's writing on this title was crisp and interesting and left me wanting more by the end of the issue. Damn him.

So I guess I'll be picking up Astonishing X-Men for awhile. I'm sure it'll eventually go downhill. After all, writers don't stay on a title until they die. They eventually move on and it's left to some other schmuck to keep the momentum going. Never works though. They invariably fuck things up.
