Dead in Dixie

Dead in Dixie by Charlaine HarrisI mentioned last month in my blog that I had received some books from the Science Fiction Book Club. Among the bunch was a collection of three novels by Charlaine Harris called Dead in Dixie. The premise for this series sounded fun: Sookie Stackhouse, telepathic barmaid in the small town of Bon Temps, Lousiana, has a vampire boyfriend and solves the occasional mystery. Hey, vampires and mystery in the South. I'm there.

Dead in Dixie collects Dead Until Dark, Living Dead in Dallas and Club Dead. All three are so much fun I didn't want the book to end. Sookie is a wonderfully warm-hearted and plucky heroine. Bill, her vampire boyfriend is suitably mysterious and sexy but with a gentlemanly Southern charm befitting his Civil War era roots. Since Charlaine Harris is a mystery writer each book is also a mystery and Sookie proves she's got a brain underneath all that blonde hair by being in the thick of things. Of course, being a telepath doesn't hurt either.

These books are really fun and I highly recommend them.
