Okay, I really want to know. Why are so many people threatened by the thought of same sex marriage? What's the big deal? Our esteemed President has taxpayer money paying White House lawyers to look into a way to "codify" that "marriage is between a man and a woman." It never ceases to amaze me that people who purport to be against big government have no problems with government meddling in our personal lives. I dunno. Kinda seems government can't get much bigger than telling you who you can and cannot love and choose to spend your life with. I've seen talking heads on t.v. actually say that legalizing gay and lesbian marriages would be an insult to heterosexual unions. Excuse me? I'm hetereosexual and married and I don't feel insulted. I don't feel that my marriage is any less valid. [FYI: The old men in the Vatican are weighing in on this too.]
I'll tell you what the real problem is to these people. If you recognize legally gay and lesbian unions then you've got to recognize them in every facet of society. They'll have to be afforded the same rights and protection under the law as straights. Oh, and you'll have to come to terms with the fact that they're out there in your community, working with you, attending church with you, coaching your soccer teams, ringing up your purchases at Wal-mart, sitting next to you in the movie theater. God forbid, some of them are going to be your children! [Right, Dick Cheney?]
Even if the President's lawyers can find some way to legally bar states from passing same sex union laws, I'm here to tell you that it won't be around forever. Just as laws set in place to limit the rights of women and the rights of African Americans have fallen by the wayside so too will these. I'm hoping my kids study this period in school and are as mystified as I was when reading about all the hoopla surrounding the civil rights movement. It all boils down to ignorance and fear, folks. Wake up and smell the 21st century. It's gonna happen whether you like it or not.
